How many times have I heard that one?
It seems that when someone decides to lose weight, they always want to lose it fast. So what is the best diet for fast weight-loss? Is it shakes, cabbage soup, starvation diets, high or low protein or is it some of the dozens of other fads available on the market today? How exactly do you choose?
Ready for some brutal honesty?
I wouldn't touch any of the faddy diets (that's what they are) with a 10 foot stick of celery, I wouldn't give them the time or the money and neither should you.
Are you ready for a big fat revelation?
There is no shortcut to losing weight...NONE.
So STOP looking for one, it doesn't exist.
The weight-loss industry for the most, thrive on the emotion of a 'new' dieter. When someone decides to 'try' again, they want a result yesterday if possible, but will accept a remarkable weight-loss this week if 'yesterday' is too much to ask. The industry responds to this like flies to honey, they know that when in this state, the new dieter will buy another faddy diet and we all know that the mood of commitment will only last for a week or 2 at best.
6 months later, let's try again, only this time we'll try another faddy diet promising to get us into a bikini by summer when we are currently sheltering from the spring rain under our own circus tent.
6 months later...and it goes on and on.
A quick faddy diet will not work, period. It will get some weight off you initially (if you can stick to it) but it's so difficult to adhere to that in a single moment of frustration the fad diet will be given the big heave-ho. A fad diet will promise you rapid results by cutting back dramatically on your calorie intake.
What happens?
Apart from you being hungry, your body goes into survival mode thinking its being starved and your metabolism slows down, thus retaining the weight. Once you stop the silly fad diet and eat the way you did before (which you will do in all probability), the weight piles back on again and often brings a few friends along with it.
That's not sustainable, is it?
Apart from the silly situation above, faddy diets also create havoc with your body, because there is little balance, if any at all, of the key nutrients required to maintain your basic health. No wonder anyone on a fad diet feels lousy and can't wait for it to be over. Sustainable? I don't think so.
The basic tips for losing weight by Healthy Eating are this:
Drink plenty of water, you've heard it before and that's for a reason, you need it. Don't confuse thirst with hunger, many people do.
Processed foods, steer clear of them. They are not good for you and have far too much salt and bad additives that will have a negative effect on your body. You know those frozen well known diet meals? Yes, they are in this category too.
Avoid sugar. Yes, you've heard that one before too. Sugar can sabotage your plans to lose weight, so try to avoid it in hot drinks.
Make sure you eat enough food. Your body needs certain fuels in certain quantities and if you feel hungry, chances are you're not eating enough. This can cause your body to hold onto stored fat, so ensure that you get the balance right.
Exercise, move and this will rapidly accelerate your weight-loss. You need to exercise, you really do. If you have a physical limitation, then you should seek advice on how best to get 'moving', for all others, get off your behind and start being a player, not an observer. Just walk, walk & walk some more if you're starting from a very unfit place. Increase with time and then get more adventurous as you get fitter.
The upshot is, there is no Genie going to pop out anytime soon and grant your wish that you are a lot slimmer, or fitter. It's down to you, all of it, it's your call. You are the one who will decide whether you want health, fun and a longer life. You decide.
